Watkins Header Ends Drought as Aston Villa Secures Historic Win in France

Aston Villa took a significant step toward the Europa League quarter-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Lille at the Stade Pierre Mauroy on Thursday, with striker Ollie Watkins ending his seven-game goal drought to give the English side a crucial away advantage.

The England international broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute, rising to meet a flicked-on long ball with a deft header over Lille goalkeeper Berke Ozer. The goal marked Watkins’ first since late January and continued his remarkable aerial record—he now has 17 headed goals across all competitions over the past three seasons, more than any other Premier League player during that span.

“It was a cagey first half, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances,” noted observers at the match. Villa had early opportunities through Morgan Rogers and Jadon Sancho, but failed to capitalize before the interval.

Lille, featuring former Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud, finished the first half strongly. Giroud glanced a header wide before Romain Perraud’s dipping shot was palmed away by Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. However, the French side lacked cutting edge despite enjoying possession in the final stages and were repeatedly caught offside attempting to release Giroud.

Villa nearly doubled their advantage when Amadou Onana’s curling effort clipped the angle of post and crossbar. Watkins later went down under a challenge from Ozer, but penalty appeals were waved away by referee José María Sánchez Martínez.

The victory carries substantial historical significance for the Birmingham club. It marks Aston Villa’s first-ever triumph on French soil, having previously failed to win in six attempts, including defeats in their last three visits. Additionally, Villa have now won six consecutive Europa League matches—becoming the first English team to achieve such a streak since Arsenal in 2020.

The win also represented a milestone for manager Unai Emery, who recorded his 100th victory as Aston Villa boss. His side, who finished second behind Lyon in the league phase with seven wins, successfully navigated the closing stages to secure a clean sheet and maintain their position as strong contenders for quarter-final progression.

Lille, who have now won just two of their past nine home games in all competitions, will need to overturn the deficit in next week’s second leg at Villa Park. The French side suffered a second consecutive home loss for the first time, highlighting their recent struggles on home soil.

Despite the narrow margin, Emery may feel his side could have extended their advantage. Villa were clinical where it mattered, scoring with their only shot on target, while John McGinn’s return to contention provides additional options for the return fixture.
