Original ‘Coronation Street’ Star Alan Rothwell Dies at 89

British television has lost one of its foundational figures. Alan Rothwell, the versatile actor and director whose career spanned more than seven decades, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at the age of 89. His family confirmed he died peacefully in a hospital following a short illness.

Rothwell, a fixture in the British entertainment landscape, is perhaps best remembered by international audiences as David Barlow, the brother of Ken Barlow, in the inaugural episodes of the long-running ITV soap opera Coronation Street. Launching with the show in December 1960, Rothwell remained a recurring presence until 1968, helping to secure the program’s place in television history.

Alan Rothwell was one of the original cast members of Coronation Street, having appeared in the soap’s very first broadcast in 1960.

Beyond the cobbles of Weatherfield, Rothwell enjoyed a prolific career that extended across radio, film, and stage. Before his breakout on Coronation Street, he gained recognition as Jimmy Grange in the iconic BBC Radio 4 serial The Archers. Throughout his extensive career, he appeared in film roles such as Nothing But The Best and the 2013 comedy Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa. He was also a familiar face to television audiences of the 1970s and 80s as the presenter of children’s programs Picture Box and Hickory House.

His career as a professional actor and director lasted for more than 70 years, touching generations of audiences.

Industry peers have been swift to honor his contributions. Samia Longchambon, who portrays Maria Connor on Coronation Street, recalled that Rothwell’s influence went beyond the camera.

“Alan was a also drama teacher at our drama school and I have such fond memories of being taught by him… he was a wonderful man.”

The production team at Coronation Street released a statement commending his legacy.

“We’re very sorry to hear of Alan Rothwell’s passing and extend our sincerest condolences to his family at this very sad time. He created an iconic and memorable character in David Barlow and will forever be remembered as one of the original cast members of Coronation Street.”

Rothwell was among the last remaining members of the soap’s 1960 original cast, which also includes the record-breaking William Roache.

William Roache, who plays Ken Barlow and holds the world record as the longest-serving soap opera actor, reflected this week on his long connection to the show’s history, noting his ongoing commitment to the character he helped launch alongside Rothwell. Despite the somber news affecting the original Barlow family, the legacy of the actors who sat on those iconic benches in 1960 remains a cornerstone of British cultural history. Rothwell is survived by his wife and family, who described him as a beloved father, grandfather, and uncle.
