Michael Sheen Reflects on Family Legacy as ‘Good Omens’ Reaches Conclusion

As Good Omens wraps up its celebrated run on Prime Video with a concluding 90-minute instalment, lead actor Michael Sheen is taking time to reflect on the personal milestones and family history that have shaped his trajectory from a budding youth footballer to a renowned stage and screen icon.

Sheen, 57, has recently spoken candidly about the profound influence of his late father, Meyrick Sheen, who passed away in 2025 at age 85. A respected personnel manager at the British Steel Corporation and a beloved local figure in Port Talbot, Meyrick was known for his community spirit—and his uncanny talent as a Jack Nicholson impersonator. According to Sheen, his father’s dedication to philanthropy became a guiding light for his own public advocacy.

Sheen has channeled his grief into continued charitable activism, including co-authoring a children’s book centered on the issue of homelessness, a cause championed by his father. The depth of their bond is now permanently memorialized in the actor’s home town: a mural of the star in Port Talbot has been updated to include a portrait of his father, a gesture Sheen recently described as a deeply moving tribute.

While the Welsh actor is currently lauded for his portrayal of the angel Aziraphale opposite David Tennant, his life could have taken a vastly different path. Decades ago, as a teenager, Sheen was scouted for the Arsenal youth squad. The move to London, however, was ultimately vetoed by his parents.

“It was just too big an upheaval, so my father said no on my behalf. I was very upset by at the time, but very grateful for later on. The chance of actually getting through to the first team and playing professional football in the Premiership is so slim, really, and your career is so short.”

Michael Sheen, Actor

Sheen is currently raising two daughters with Swedish actress Anna Lundberg, with whom he has collaborated on projects such as Staged and Celebrity Gogglebox. His romantic history is well-documented, marked by high-profile relationships including actress Kate Beckinsale, with whom he shares a daughter, and later pairings with Rachel McAdams and Sarah Silverman.

Beyond his professional accolades, Sheen has become as notable for his social conscience as his acting depth. In 2017, the actor famously returned his OBE following an intensive study of Welsh history, and he remains a vocal critic on British political matters, including the policies of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson. His commitment to social causes is extensive, spanning support for the NSPCC, The Relationships Centre, and various addiction recovery initiatives.

As the actor closes the book on one of his most beloved television roles, he continues to balance the high-stakes world of international entertainment with a deeply rooted life in Wales. Whether he is working alongside his daughter, who has humorously dubbed herself his “unofficial agent,” or advocating for the vulnerable, Sheen’s focus remains anchored by the lessons imparted by his father in the industrial landscape of Port Talbot.
