Luka Doncic Facing Suspension After 16th Technical Foul of Season
ORLANDO, Fla. — Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic finds himself in familiar, yet precarious, territory following Saturday night’s victory over the Orlando Magic. After being assessed his 16th technical foul of the 2025-26 season, the All-Star guard is currently slated for an automatic one-game suspension.
The incident occurred with 1:19 remaining in the third quarter when Doncic was whistled for a double technical alongside Magic center Goga Bitadze. The two players engaged in a verbal altercation while Doncic was at the free-throw line, a sequence that resulted in the officials intervening to issue the penalties. While the Lakers extended their win streak to nine games behind Luke Kennard’s game-winning triple, the organization now faces a critical decision regarding their star’s immediate availability.
Doncic has reached the 16-technical foul threshold, triggering an automatic one-game suspension under NBA league rules.
The Lakers are scheduled to face the Detroit Pistons on Monday. Although the team has the option to protest the technical foul in hopes of having it rescinded, team brass must weigh the tactical necessity of Doncic’s presence against the strength of their remaining schedule. As the team currently holds a 46-25 record and a firm grasp on the third seed in the Western Conference, the front office may determine that serving the suspension against an Eastern Conference opponent is a safer long-term strategy than risking his absence during a pivotal late-season conference matchup.
Doncic had previously been assessed 15 technical fouls this season, leaving him one away from this mandatory disciplinary action.
This is not the first time the Slovenian playmaker has flirted with the league’s suspension limit. During his tenure with the Dallas Mavericks, Doncic narrowly avoided similar suspensions in 2022 and 2023 after the league office successfully rescinded his 16th technical foul on both occasions. However, his disciplinary history this season has been particularly turbulent. Earlier this month, he was fined $50,000 for directing an inappropriate gesture toward an official during a game against the New York Knicks.
Following his 15th technical foul earlier in March, which came during a stretch of games against the New Orleans Pelicans and Denver Nuggets, the guard expressed frustration regarding officiating standards.
I heard three other players say the exact same sentence and didn’t get a tech.

The Lakers’ victory over the Magic marked their ninth consecutive win, maintaining their status as one of the hottest teams in professional basketball.
Despite his recent run-ins with officials, Doncic remains an unstoppable force on the court, averaging 33 points in his latest outing despite a difficult second half. Whether he plays against the Pistons or remains sidelined to prepare for Wednesday’s matchup against the Indianapolis Pacers, his status remains the primary focus of the league’s disciplinary watch. For now, the Lakers must wait on word from the league office to see if the streak-extending hero will be cleared to lead them against Detroit.
