Debuting at CES 2026, the concept device represents the company’s most ambitious attempt yet to address growing consumer demand for upgradeable, customizable, and longer-lasting electronics—and it could reshape how business users think about their daily drivers.

The concept starts with a 14-inch laptop base that, at first glance, appears conventional. But its true capabilities emerge through a detachable keyboard and secondary display module that can be configured in multiple orientations. Users can stack the secondary screen above the primary display for a dual-monitor setup, attach it to the rear of the laptop lid to mirror content for presentations, or prop it up as a standalone external monitor using an integrated kickstand. Industry observers have noted that while the concept draws clear inspiration from competitors—particularly Framework’s modular architecture and Asus’s dual-screen innovations—Lenovo’s execution brings these ideas into a cohesive package targeted at the professional market.

The announcement comes amid a broader industry shift toward sustainable electronics design. Right-to-repair legislation has gained traction across multiple jurisdictions, and consumers are increasingly skeptical of sealed devices with limited upgrade paths. Lenovo’s earlier ThinkBook X1 Carbon, also showcased at CES 2026, introduced enhanced repairability features, though the company acknowledged those improvements were primarily designed for trained technicians rather than end users. The Modular AI Concept appears to represent a more user-centric evolution of that thinking. However, questions remain about Lenovo’s commitment to true openness; the company has retained certain proprietary components, potentially limiting the scope of user modifications compared to Framework’s fully documented ecosystem.

For now, the ThinkBook Modular AI PC remains exactly what its name suggests—a concept. Lenovo has a documented history of using experimental designs to gauge market interest before committing to production, and the company’s current ThinkBook lineup represents more conventional offerings. Whether this particular vision reaches consumers will likely depend on manufacturing feasibility, cost considerations, and market reception.
