Actor Frazer Hammill Found Dead Following Sexual Assault Arrest

An inquest into the death of actor Frazer Hammill has revealed that the 41-year-old took his own life just one day after being arrested in connection with a sexual assault investigation. Hammill, known for his roles in the popular ITV soap Emmerdale and the BBC drama Happy Valley, was discovered by authorities at his home in late December 2025.

Lancashire Police confirmed that the investigation into the actor has been formally closed following his death. The force stated that they had received a report on December 17, 2025, regarding an alleged sexual assault involving a woman in her 40s that reportedly occurred three days prior. South Yorkshire Police, acting on behalf of Lancashire authorities, arrested Hammill on December 29. He was interviewed and subsequently released on bail that same day.

Key facts regarding the investigation and inquest include:

During the inquest held this week at Doncaster Coroner’s Court, evidence was presented indicating that Hammill had meticulously planned his final actions. The court heard he had left a note for his neighbor instructing them not to enter his residence but instead to notify the police. He also left letters for family and friends. Coroner Louise Slater, upon reviewing the evidence, concluded that his death was a deliberate act.

“Therefore, I am satisfied that this was a deliberate act and Frazer had put thought, planning and intention into his actions.”

— Louise Slater, Area Coroner

Hammill’s sister, Caroline, testified that the family was left in “complete shock,” expressing that they had no indication he was struggling with a mental health crisis. Custody officers who processed Hammill following his arrest noted that he appeared to be in “good spirits” upon his release, with police stating they had no immediate concerns regarding his safety or mental well-being at that time.

Beyond his television work, which included portraying a prison guard in Emmerdale and a detective constable in Happy Valley, Hammill held various roles in film and theater, including the titular character in The Heart of Thomas Hardy and Jonathan O’Malley in Last Laugh. The loss of the actor has been described by those close to him as sudden and deeply unexpected.
